just weather
March
fences bending wrong
in soggy ground
snow listless
cross furrowed in tired smudges
by wet east winds
after months of west
last night’s wind
carried pig screaming
from the long green barn
the farmer’s wife
face sagging
says a sow died
great running pools of blood
ten piglets crusted black
climbing stiff udders
sucking air
face ashen
she remembers sorting
October potatoes
picks at her skin
calls it
exhaustion peeling
looks at the sodden sky
unbroken relentless
and hopes for a late spring
