Bearings
Between Dog Farm and Little London,
drizzle seeps in from the west and turns
the middle distance grey. We cut above
the edge of Tetford to the Roman Road,
the hawthorns’ brushmarks up on Nab Hill ridge,
and walk a mile along the Bluestone Heath Road
where the mist begins to shred and olive strands
of fields take shape along the valley side.
A woman washing plates at Oxcombe sees
us pass the keeper’s cottage with its roof
staved in. Perhaps the pheasants that we startle
startle her, wings whirring in the rainy reeds.
And where a signpost arrows three dark paths
and rooks are winding early evening in,
we lay bags on a mossy log, refold
OS maps that don’t mark diversions and,
rough-guessing where we are from where we’ve been,
gauge Maidenwell to Woody’s Top will take
us more or less as long as Pyewipe Farm to
Hardens Gap, including Cloven Hill.
