Border Crossing
The vervet monkey looks locked
in pace and compass. Over
and over again she patrols
the cement platform, climbs
the metal railing and jumps down,
trailing her dead infant, holding him
tightly by his long left arm.
The wooden walls of the border post
snap with the heat, an official stamps
each passport repeatedly then
waves us out of Zambia.
