Chanticleer Magazine #8,
Chanticleer Press, 6/1 Jamaica Mews, Edinburgh, EH3 6HN £3, A5, 40pp
Richard Livermore opens Chanticleer Magazine with a lively editorial which, on a certain level, is complimented by Bogdan Tiganov's poem No Readership, which appears in the magazine. Both pieces explore some of the problems with the current poetry scene. The content of the magazine is, in the main, not subject to those problems. In fact the poetry is enticing and occasionally begins at unusual starting points, as in Cat's Cradle by Ira Cohen,
Last night I was writing
A long poem on the ceiling
In invisible ink
Chanticleer Magazine is Scottish but resists the temptation to dress itself in plaid. Instead, and in common with Poetry Cornwall, it reaches out from its regionality into something more global. An extract from Death In Venice by Thomas Mann links to an article on E.M.Forster. Most of the poetry is accessible, well written and pertinent. However Michael Grainger's Testimonial to Viagre, though amusing, is perhaps too lightweight.
