Waves of being
I need to be the throaty hum of bass a second before the drum,
the ‘and’ before the 1.
The soul of a song that is head-noddingly, yes,
I want to shake hearts.
I need to be the prelude to a kiss,
the extension of a second when the air breaks apart
and dances with sparklers.
I need to bring the joy of a new word spoken by a small autistic boy,
who looked with squirrel eyes
and a brain so shut and timid it could snap
as easily as his white bird limbs.
I need to be cold night-blackened sand,
falling damp from your open hand.
