FORBIDDEN TO CUT THE PINES
says the notice under
our window
PROHIBIDO CORTAR PINOS
right against the wall
where the bulldozer’s claw
is ripping them out
digging its fangs
deep into the sap.
we stand and watch.
ten minutes it takes
to clear the whole plot.
so the truck can back in
with the bathroom suite
so landscapers
can get to work
with palm-trees
bougainvillea
some rock-pools
and fountains.
so the couple
who can’t pronounce
the name of the village
can move in
with their satellite-dish
and their Dobermanns
fence themselves off
behind cameras and wire
and look out over hillsides
of whitewash and tiles
blue discs of pools
where there used to be pine.
we walk down to swim
trying to believe
we’re not one of them.
