Apogee
In the British Museum
One thumbnail smooth as avocado-stone,
fingers delicate with illness.
Her skin hangs
in maroon leather folds,
two black ruptures
for eyes.
The gash in her ribs
belched out
butcher’s packages
of kidney, bowel, liver.
Hot peristalsis leeched to ash
in damp-haired exhaustion.
Now her heavy amethysts,
carnelians are lifted.
Red petals on her forehead
ticked to dust.
Slower than sand
she has found her footing
become ineradicable.
Her oval heart
clutched high
like an innermost seed
in the gorgeous arched fluting
of capsicum.
