Waiting for the Mayor, Ithaca
The Mayor has decreed it’s Autumn
so the museum is closed.
Someone has gone to find him.
We stand in the rain
by the statue of Poseidon.
Should we consult an oracle ?
Sacrifice a black goat ?
Our cruise ship waits in the bay
with its tattoed sailors
and thin Scots captain.
Welcome to Paradise Island,
Says a friendly local, adding,
You from the boat ? How much
it cost you per day ?
We equivocate. A skinny cat
devours a fish-head.
Over in Penelope Apartments
a precocious toddler points and waves.
Odysseus is still on his way.
