Sonnet: The Daytime Mugging In The High Street
Who would want to attack that poor little thing
walking up Putney High Street at 9.30 in the morning,
without a thought in her head except to get to Putney BR Station
and then to Clapham Junction, to a Sale at Arding & Hobbs,
with a view to buying a quilt, or was it a fan heater?
Well, somebody did! Went for her purse in her basket,
pushed her into the road. Severe bruising, three lower vertebrae cracked.
A young chap, he missed the purse, made off into Fulham.
I reckon he was a loony; or an addict, crazy on a Monday morning,
needing a fix after the weekend. Who knows? She didn’t even see him.
Luckily for her, there wasn’t any traffic. Thrown into a main road,
she could have been killed. All the conventional judgments
say what a terrible thing (true) and what a terrible man!
But) say, too, she might still be better off than a tormented young junkie.
