Susan Wicks
Through glass
A country of dark islands
where trees reach in the wind
and ivy shimmers, marooned
behind flawed glass.
Look at it long enough
and faces grow in the bark,
line-drawn pictures
in the fork of the branch,
the sky inhabited.
Across this frozen liquid
wings leave a spreading wake –
as if simply by looking
you could learn to see
all islands reflected,
your life upended in sky.
But there is one pane
your eyes are drawn to,
newer, clear as the air
where the trees stand
neither drowning in bright haze
nor abandoned.
