Entrecasteaux has hatreds
As other cities have loves
So had I but the teeth of the Sybil
The juniper is bitter and the holm-oak is persistent
The juniper is masked and the holm-oak is hooded
Spring comes down the mountain
The juniper is abundant and the pine bobs before it
Atys your tree upon Mother Ida
Entrecasteaux has hatreds
As other cities have loves
So had I but the teeth of the Sybil
Spring comes down the mountain to the narrow ravine
Twist your waters, avenging river
Entrecasteaux has houses
With rooms for intrigue and murder
But above all for persistent voices.
