In the company of broken men
On a hillside
of gabion colours,
a raining September's
afternoon. I was entombed in a bar
with no name - in a dark bleated corridor
of the room.
Stripping the dusty
smears of fallen chalk,
windows flushed
by the rain's acidity.
The strong winds jingle
at the bolted door, as copper leaves fall
from circling trees.
I listen to the
fractured whispers
of gravel voices
with sorrowful tales.
The pathway to exchange
their hellish grief, and where woe
can unfold her broken sails.
The scornful hush of him
soaking his tears,
see the sunken body
at the bar-stool.
His hunched head
on limping shoulders,
the drunken guardian
of the pool-hall.
