The Forest
Once upon a time the trees
Breathed green this land.
There was no gap, no gash
In a garment that reached the sea.
All the songs were wood, all the wolves
Were songs, and no paths, no roads
Cut. Through that glade the light glowed
The rain grew. An emerald,
A huge jewel, ringing with many greens,
A jade scent, a lemon air, a noise of serpentines,
Day and night. Until the time we stumbled on this earth,
Slashing as we went, burning our way
Into an empty future, a cleared waste.
