Hurling Stones
The last visitors roll from the harbour
as the spring evening stretches
like an empty net.
Three boys clatter on the rag of beach,
hurl stones at the sea.
The smallest wants to make a splash.
He bends his knees in too-large jeans,
stakes his claim to chunks of granite
but before he completes his double-arm sweep
they drop to the sand.
The next laughs, tests the weight
of pebbles, bowls them precisely.
The mauve waters shudder faintly
but continue to whisper onto the shore.
The oldest swipes discs of rock
across the water. He cranes his neck
at gulls drifting from empty boat to empty boat.
He is bored, wants to turn his back on this
but can’t resist staring at the plunge
as the sea seals the fate of the stones.
