Neighbour
It was murky for October even on open hill,
dusk on the forestry track, night
on either hand. Below the path
was a trace of walls - Caeglas.
Dark day, dark trees conferred
a chilly mystery, estranging stone,
creating sombre shapes with little to say of home.
At night, downstream, I thought of dark on dark
in that desolation, wind getting up
with a black whirl of branches round Caeglas,
crying in crevices of rock,
ruffling noisy invisible streams,
buffeting walls, as when
there were those to hear it.
Even in this I was included,
as the same wind thrummed on my roof,
cried on my hearth, as on my dark
neighbour’s; even in this.
