Bennett Tracy Huffman
Beach Party
The sun went down and bats came out flitting
through the air searching for flies. Then it grew
late, and I had to go, promising to
meet them on the beach. They weren’t there, but I
did bump into her in the night heading
for a midnight beach party with all of
its promises of sin. The dark blue bay
was invaded by lights and social sound
when we should have been in midnight naked
swims amongst the phosphorescent fish and
moonlight. I excused myself, knowing I
wouldn’t see her again, though she only lives
up the road a ways, and scaled treacherous
beach cliffs in a hollow pitch black darkness.
Originally from California, Bennett Huffman is currently a research postgraduate at the University of Liverpool. He received a MFA in creative writing from the University of Oregon in 1989, where he co-authored the novel Caverns (Penguin Books, New York, 1990) with Ken Kesey. Bennett has had poems in Young Voices in American Poetry, and Ambit 155 and 158 among others. A book of short fiction, The Farther One Travels, was released in the Fall of 1999 from Beaver Pond Press in California.
