Revelations
Like a huge eye : an intolerable flash
of pure vision, then a roar of pain.
A whole day's light compressed in a second
and the landscape "as it really is" - leaves
in X-ray, animals brains at ebb,
our skulls nestling in haloes of imagination.
In light or dark, for us the cliches are real:
the hair I don't have on my spine rises,
at the window the dead faces jump into life.
The TV at least is blank, switched off.
All evening it was a cool polyglot.
The dead and the living faces stared through me
even the frantic woman on the smuggled film
blackening and flashing because of the "bad conditions"
as she listed her husband ' s sufferings "under treatment,"
the banal delirium of facts "as they really are,"
fact upon fact, her Russian so feverish
the Swedish subtitles could hardly keep up.
I count seconds. Continuous replay.
The first crackle of rain is the sudden clattering
of a terrified crowd in a narrow street.
