Petroglyphs of the Heart
November cold in the North bites
at your hair, teases doubts
in the backs of your eyes
and scatters all the fragile words
left unattended at the bottom
of a summer wardrobe
beautiful lovers, smelling
of sandalwood and jasmine,
who slept on a Beltane beach,
now cut and bleed
at the sorcery of winter’s sting
outside the Blue Angel Café
a woman sits on a low wall, haphazard
stones like sleeping warriors
remind her how, one late June,
she watched it first take shape
today there is a terraced garden
and a water feature,
but she knows its beginnings,
sweated, unplanned, a dazzling energy-
its spirit bordering her thighs.
