The Spare Room
With triangular blades, we edge
down the wall’s dampened lines
as though unsealing an envelope.
The under-paper, waxy, sunburnt
peels under fingernails and reveals
black emulsion beneath: tack-marked,
faded grey around the poster shadows.
The stripper blisters it; the scales split
betraying pink blooms, flesh roses.
We prune these back, and let rip
a nursery squadron. The planes smile
in flush formation, the lower ones drawn
into crayon whirlwinds. Paedoglyphics.
Paring right to the plaster, we bring to light
an etching: ‘PETE FOR POPE - 1978’.
