The winners of the 1998 Bedford Open Poetry Competition were chosen by this year’s judge Jo Shapcott from over 600 anonymous submissions. Her selection reflects her passion for poetry which ‘strikes from new and surprising angles’. The prizewinners are:
First Prize, ‘Death as a Nude’ by Antony Nicholls
Antony Nicholls’ poems have appeared in magazines including ‘Acumen’ and ‘Thumbscrew’. He has previously been awarded prizes in the Kickstart Poetry Competition and the 1997 Speakeasy Competition. He is a prizewinner in this year’s Daily Telegraph/ Arvon Poetry Competition. He lives in London.
Runners-up ‘Sewing Circle’ by Nicolette Golding

‘Laser-Man’ by Diane Tang
Nicolette Golding has been writing poetry in earnest for about three years. Her work has appeared in ‘Poetry London Newsletter’, ‘Poetry Nottingham International’ and ‘Poetry Life’. She lives in East London.
Gordon Simms has been a prizewinner in the Surrey Writers’ Open Poetry Competition and the Dulwich Poetry Competition. He won the Preston Open Poetry Competition and is a prizewinner in this year’s Daily Telegraph / Arvon Poetry Competition. He was born in Haynes, Bedfordshire and now lives in Lancashire.
Diane Tang was a prizewinner in the Herne Hill Open Poetry Competition and commended in the Blue Nose Poetry Competition. Her poems have appeared in magazines including ‘Poetry Nottingham International’ and ‘Staple’.Born in the USA, she now lives in Middlesex.
Bedfordshire Prize, ‘The Scold’s Bridle’ by Kathryn Youngs
Kathryn Youngs studied creative writing as part of a Cultural Studies Degree at Norwich School of Art. She has worked as a painter and graphic designer and is currently studying for a PGCE at De Montfort University.
