The Eye of the Beholder
When I awake before I put in my lenses
my grandfather’s painting looks like a Monet.
Propped up by pillows, sipping tea
I contemplate my very own masterpiece.
The flowers’ red heads
bleed into a blue-wash background.
Are they poppies, roses?
Such wonderful impressionism,
all sensuous suggestion
framed in gilded wood, hung
on my bedroom wall painted off-white
in Dulux’s ‘Timeless’.
Later, no longer myopic, I look again.
The brush strokes are a definite attempt at definition.
Yesterday’s flowers in a home-made vase
looking in need of love and light.
The wall needs a fresh coat of ‘Timeless’.
I step forward to stroke the picture’s rough paint,
my finger following my grandfather’s line,
touching his still beating art with this line.
Something I could never do to a Monet.
