A Coast in Bohemia
On seas angled at thirty-five degrees,
their waves a tessellation of red tiles,
Hradčany Castle sails into the wind.
The crew have changed their khaki uniforms
for operetta epaulettes and glitz,
but dance the same old hornpipes round the masts,
parade amongst the strolling passengers.
We walk together on the upper deck,
our fingertips electric with the touch
of seaspray. Your telescopic lens
rakes the horizon for uncharted shoals -
a rocket at blast-off, squat chisel spires,
an Eiffel tower, erupting domes with hosts
of gilded angels glittering in the sun.
Bohemian shipwrecks catch one unawares.
