Abigail Wyatt
Mite
One by one, she has surrendered them,
gently and with proper reverence.
She desires, after all, to win the protection
of these absent, inattentive gods.
Where they reside she is unsure;
for the heavens have been emptied
and the mountains sing only silence.
The sea shudders and the tides turn,
yet no bush speaks or burns.
Her heart is aware that her coin is small
while their purposes loom vast and mysterious.
Still, it grieves her to learn how the gift
of a life invites no richer blessing than this.
