red-kneed, he roughs in
grass and a blue sky-
the finishing touches.
the shoppers on Grafton Street
give barely a glance
at his chalk house
in pink and pale yellow -
tourists, occasional visitors
take a quick look
but give him nothing.
three doors away,
his sister, her dull hair tangled,
pink cardigan half open,
plays slow tunes
on a school recorder,
her stub fingers forcing strict time,
her begging bag also empty.
it is easier
to drop money
into the fiddle case
where Handel is being played, well,
in front of the Body Shop.
