Online
Through Spring I watched the fledgling sparrows queue
on the rain-stained garden fence, as the boughs of
the lilac bush
burst Butterkist into the sun.
Later, I watched the swallows gather on the runway
of the lines
readying themselves for their shadow-skim - over
fish and coral reefs,
over the carcasses of sunken ships set in the resin
of the sea -
to lands lit by the sun’s immutable white on white.
In winter, the blue, numinous light from the computer
screen
shone on your face as you showed me how to get online,
how to navigate the breezes of this new, unstoppable
ocean
swashing in under the door of our own history;
how to take off into the winds of change.
