Trawlers drag through Newfoundland seas
deep blacks of the Kingdom of Cod
flow down the throats of our childhood
nations of white fish swimming one creature
the largest amount consumed in living-rooms
in front of Crackerjack from last week’s Mirror
Waves narrate the legend of icebergs
tea’s mashed in the pot dash of sterilised
during Vimto summers of the early 70’s
humming Hot Love with mushy peas on trays
heaving round the hold slippery with ice
as men in sou’westers steam home
Salt and vinegar how many chips luv
Can do you plaice but you’ll have to wait
on their way from Iceland emptying cargo
on the deck at Fleetwood less and less
shoals departed smaller the hunger as deep
eaten with fingers washed down with loss
