Lorraine Marwood
The dissolving fence
It begins growing
late December after blowfly heat
and fire-ban days.
The wind does its calling
tough brush strokes
in every gust.
And the grass somersaults across
the pasture, volleys between
fruit trees and garden border.
Still the wind sweeps,
the yellow chaff comes arching
sticking to the foundation layer
willowing across the shed entrances
knee deep in summer snow,
the crackle and hiss of its collective
breathing.
These are the wind whip days
a land and treeline call
to preen the country roads
of their spring time excesses
a time of forward planning
when the blowgrass fence dissolves
into fragments, tangents of thin lines
breaking down into survival components
seed
chaff
visionary projectile.
