I am concerned to find a place
to rest when clay collapses:
my smile lacking composure between neighbours.
No landlocked churchyard.
Think of burial at sea. Cold harbour;
below ploughing waves,
falling further than sunlight through water,
no longer a work of the weather and seasons.
Then the milk-soft river at Malevert:
weighed down to sink, but only so far.
Rocking on the sandstone bed,
and sleeping with clean-limbed driftwood.
Or my ribs bleached white and clicking
like pebbles in the upland plunge pools of the Var,
as the torrent thrashes over me,
each droplet dreaming of the sea.
