William Oxley
The Green Bridge
Swift muddied flow of waters
could carry away child or man,
a bridge of pre-War technology
painted grape green on every span.
The occasional hurrying lorry
or zipping car uses the bridge,
carrying momentarily other lives
into, or through, the village.
Mostly time avoids the place,
village dumb with silence
that turns from every stranger's gaze
to preserve an older France.
Yet, oh, its unusual bridge
bespeaks a more timeless art
which says, though separate, people
can never be entirely apart.
