Literary Giants
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin. After finishing school he went to Trinity College Dublin where he obtained a B.A. degree in drama. Among his works are The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Ernest, Salome, and volumes of poems, journals and letters.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is about a handsome bachelor who seduced then rejected a beautiful lady in the theatre and who gained pleasure, and believed in wanting pleasure to remain young — drinking alcohol, smoking and having pleasure as I said.
Basil Howard, his friend and artist, had painted his portrait, his features and his face, and all through his life of pleasure-seeking the
painting was changing,
becoming old and ugly,
showing the state of his
soul. When Dorian stabbed
the painting in a rage the
knife went through him and
he died.
Edgar Allan Poe, the American writer, was born in Boston and after finishing high school he went to Virginia University for three years but was dismissed from the university.
Poe was famous as a short story and crime writer and for poems such as Annabel Lee and The Raven. Poe wrote:
“I could not see as others saw, I could not think as others thought, I could not bring my passions from a common spring.”
Poe died at the age of forty-one, being an alcoholic, in a pub in Baltimore.
Maxim Gorky, the Russian writer, did not go to university, but became famous as a novelist and short story writer. He believed that "Life is the best university."
Charles Dickens was born in London and raised there. He had a job as a printer. Among his works is Great Expectations, a story about Pip, a young boy growing up with his love life and his adventures.
Charles Dickens' face, as portrayed with a moustache and a beard, is as familiar as his stories, novels and other writing.
