Listen, look, wonder,
you’ll never understand
the sea;
the taste of salt on the tongue,
the tang of wrack,
free
air, the rhythm of boats,
gulls lost to the horizon,
grey skies;
the harsh music of storms
above cold Poles;
ice
at the margin of existence,
the edge of water
and beyond;
dark terrifying depths where
rotting sails enshroud
the drowned.
Your mask has slipped sideways
revealing blank absence
of light,
walls that walk nowhere,
no memory, no meaning,
night.
