Sunday afternoon
What I remember most of childhood is time.
Sundays were so long back then.
And Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays …
There was so much time, so much sun,
snow, rain, fog, hail, the back garden
running on forever. As I look back,
welling up and brimming, out come
summers and winters, ice-patterns
on the windows, bilberries, the dry cracked
earth and yellow clay river leading into the forest,
like magic words from Roget’s Thesaurus,
or the pot of porridge that never ends.
So much time it begins to seep
into the Sunday afternoon, and outwards,
into the days of the week.
