the first track
the track from Fernán Pérez
rutted with the scars of rain
light filtered in salt
seventy percent humidity
in the balmy air
(how pain is sometimes embalmed)
past the tubes of polythene
shrivelled ropes of tomatoes cast
by the way side,
an open cast mine for bentonite,
chips of mineral green shimmer with artifice,
the chalk air astringent
we stop at an abandoned hacienda
a ruin
inside the walls
open to the sky
a fig tree
split palm leaves
the floor of figs
the heavy scent
(that’s how it happened)
