There you be
the Serious Clown Prince of Poetry
singin’ in the palace of a mountain king,
singin’ your Royal Garden blues,
talkin’ about throwin’ out Death,
and Truth, and Beauty, out the window,
Along with God, and Hope, and Charity,
And Faith, I’m sure.
That’s some Serious Blues.
Even Saints’ll go marchin’ to that.
So tell me your dreams,
the funny ones that save day from nite,
your foamy Ballantine Valentines,
the mongo bongoed poppa-boppa-whoppers,
your ultimate odes to civilized bombs,
the money musk farewells to whiskey,
even the tipsy topsy-turvies
gasoline voodoo hoodoos,
the boogie woogie mindfield blues.
Hey, that’s not misbehavin’,
it’s just an old Indian song
asearchin’ for Ulyssean deep-harbored treasure,
and singing a Bombay Blues.
What can anyone say?
“Everything’s out the window?”
Just hold onto Humor?
That things just Are Illuminating Bliss,
Eternally Now?
And while I think of it,
“I’ll keep an eye on my thoughts
Are they mine or are they yours?”
