Look how defaced he is, the way,
lips and nose almost gone, he bears
initials chipped, gouged, carved
onto scabbard and alabaster thighs
by local unknown boys with knives
that left brow and dog-toothed ruff
intact. Perhaps they did not vandalise
but only left their mark, mere prints,
to last as long as this amputee,
this Sir Anon, who seems to me
lovelier than most statues are,
at least, more real as witness to
the past’s attempt at looking noble.
There is the merest hint of paw
where hound and feet should be
to carry a promise through, unbroken.
