Hilary Menos
Gathering dust
Today I am gathering dust,
watching motes in a shaft of light
weave a double-helix to the sun,
thinking of those I have lost, losing the thread.
Small things come to mind.
Their particular motion describes
boots on a bridge, a bottle, wayward tracks,
an infinite number of ways up, or down.
Temptation is to slip sideways
through that shimmering migrainous line
into one of the countless other worlds
that shift, diverge, spin off in fracted code
coming back to the place where we first found
true chanterelles nosing their yellow frills
through layers of autumn leaves,
back to a time before it was too late.
