Uneliminated
In two separate dreams last night
my father was older than he ever lived to be.
Untidy whiskers grew on his chin and he seemed woeful,
his clothes and body uncared for,
his mind like an old house
with sturdy walls but not much roof left,
and wild flowers and sunlight carpeting floors.
He was more rational in the second dream.
"One gets depressed" he said, and he looked it,
but didn't get round to saying why,
leaving no possible answer ruled out,
as my appalled mind, both sympathetic and defensive,
tried to anticipate the reasons that never came.
