Brian Levison
Two Photographs
When I sit back from writing
and stare vaguely out of the window
hoping for a better word or phrase,
they are in my line of sight.
One is of two children
caught gazing at each other
unembarrassed by eye contact
as only the very young are,
or couples on their wedding day.
And one is of her in France
à table in the garden.
I remember how we set out
pate, cheese and wine for lunch,
and then she sat for the photo,
what she knew
hidden behind her smile.
More than anything
she wanted grandchildren.
That’s why I’ve placed the photos
where she and the children
can see each other.
It’s the best I can do.
