Seventeen
It’s like, did you ever stop to think that these are supposed to be the best days of your life? There’s always someone who knows better though, isn’t there? Someone to tell you you’re wrong and they’re right and so put your life on hold while they get on with theirs. It’s like, did you ever stop to think what the hell am I doing here and why am I doing what he says when he’s probably wondering the same thing, only he’s wearing pinstripes. And if he isn’t wondering that he’s probably more concerned about his car or shirt or secretarial flirt than about his empty, falling, float-home-and-die spirituality or his repressed bisexuality.
Supposing you live to be seventy (which would be lucky) that’s 17/70ths of your life down the pisser and you’re still treating the present like some insignificant prelude to something (which is actually nothing) else and you can’t even remember who you got off with last weekend and you’re not happy with your schoolwork and your job sucks and you wish you had a bigger penis but hey! You’re seventeen. These are the best days of your life. Be angry. You deserve to be.
