halfway through your life
you took a break from everything you’d done
– so many variations –
one-night stands, virgins, marriage,
multiple orgasms, adultery, blackmail,
mother sister combinations,
looking for yourself,
you found me – skinny mini, long, blonde hair,
– young and naïve enough
to think, despite the thigh-high boots,
I was more than just an object
of temptation,
so I became your lover, hostess,
wife, the mother who would bear
your child until
– halfway through my life
I took a break from you and all our worldly goods,
– everything except our child,
whose implicit love we had to learn to share
whose needs have brought me back
and kept me there.
