The Curses
Sonnet 1,272: Le Maledizzione
Our Monseigneur, his missal in his neive,
wi fowre screichs and twa shaks of halie-water,
has gane to curse the reivan Clan Grasshopper
out of the corn, forbidding them to thieve.
To caa this ban, that winnae gie them leave
tae eat, nae Christian act, wad be improper,
and yet it seems to me owre big a whopper
fir even ma smaa judgement to believe.
Grasshoppers, caiterpillars, grubs, are aa
Gode’s craiturs, and sae, jist the same, are we,
binna that we are big, and they are smaa.
Hou is it, think ye, that Monseigneur Crucifer
may curse them, and syne preach to you and me
that it is sinfu, even to curse Lucifer?
