Wrong Box
They’ve all gone
to the graveyard
with the wrong box.
She is still here
in the dark back bedroom,
inside a polished wood case
with barley sugar handle
standing on the blanketed table.
Knotted brown flex, frayed and tangled
into loose crochet of veins dangling,
the ghost frost of her silver footprint
worn into the metal sole
of the motor pedal.
Silence inside. Her crouched
in grained dark,
no more songs to make
the needle dance speedy steps
through the bunching and frothing
of friends’ frocks and gowns
because the Singer is dead.
