John the Explorer Ventures into Mental States (3)
John’s need has become
greater than himself. He
knows that without
his need
yellow poppy heads will not
ripple in cold mountain breezes,
that without his need
flat tobacco leaves will not
green hot lands.
This need, separate
and a part of,
passes through him.
To slow this need
he lays out
paraphernalia of pipe
and pouch,
composes himself
to light and
ingesting
to metabolise.
In the midst of the act
John knows that
this need can never be
wholly fulfilled,
that there will be

green leaves by the row
in hot lands.
