For the Significance of Roadworks
Wherefore I speak of beauty? Grand start!
Wherefore I speak at all should this magic
which illuminates my head bear no further
relation to reality than an
eye to a sound! How can it be this trick
that art improves on nature, like a madman's
delirium at the height of fever
could furnish a truth. Rather, we never
saw nature, but only were our art.
Above, in an upstairs flat, a man
beats a woman. Pure rage, pure fist, pure pain
and a helplessness that approaches prayer
yet somehow between them and me, the stain
of what ought not to be which leaves me sickened.
Compare with roadworks: red to warn, but instead
neglected abounding barriers
which sprawl like props for collective disinterest.
