The Pasture
I
Fences run along the field,
then end, fallen in the grass,
legs scattered like nearby hay.
And wind skips through the heather,
brushes against a horse’s hoof
that turns a weathering vane.
II
Snow grazes on the down, lifts
on houses and barn and bough, is
tossed by a cow’s twitch and breath.
Then the field melts in along the spring,
under the warmth of dripping leaves,
and the heat of steaming feet.
III
Sun patches the yellow
mist, until green begins
to spread in the trees.
And head red againats the amber sky,
a crow is on the blackened bough,
yawning before the eve.
IV
Streamings round a rock,
then slowing and bluing,
drink the sinking light.
Fences run along the field,
then end, fallen in the grass,
legs scattered like nearby hay.
