blue bags of cans
in ditch and trees
the pink condom
a flattened foreskin
the barrack-buster
homemade cooked up
to go with the shell cases
and pipebombs
plastic cows poured
from a box and rattled
worshipful cows
wallowing centre circle
a puddle of sky
the camouflaged kids
inside a winter hedge
fencing two-handed
with light sabres
minus batteries
Howard Wright lectures in Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Ulster, Belfast. Recent poems have appeared in Poetry Ireland and Cyphers. His first collection, King of Country, is in preparation at Blackstaff Press.
