Strong is the Wind (text)
Ludwig Borin, high vizier of Prussia and the Chancellor of the University of Königsberg, leapt to his feet behind his desk as two heavyweight guardsmen dragged into his study a scrawny but well-dressed captive.
“A would-be assassin?” asked Borin as he cautiously peered into the man’s desolate and baleful face, swathed in long black hair.
“Excellency,” replied the senior sergeant, “we caught him with a gun on the castle balustrade which he had scaled with a rope and tackle.”
“Are you a malefactor or have you some other purpose in this castle?” shouted Borin into the twisted face.
“I am a Jew and a rabbi,” said the captive in his defence, “I want to kill an atheist before I die of cancer. . . that atheist is you!”
“Me forsooth!” exclaimed Borin. . . ”I attend both Lutheran and Catholic churches regularly. I even employ men of God – theologians – to reveal God’s plan to me and the rest of the Prussian nobility. Are you seriously saying that you would have me killed?”
“You are a mammon-worshipper, a misogynist and a backslider. You have imprisoned thousands of true Jews for not bribing you even when bribery is a criminal offence in Prussia!”
