Ten Summers Late
Peace-flame living, heart beating
to the Aquarian age, crossed over
the Golden Gate ten summers late
so missed the music, missed the love,
Country Joe, Grateful Dead,
Captain Beefheart and Family Dog.
Congregation had upped and gone-
no sign of Haight Street’s be-in throng,
only a thin trail of beautiful people
finally drifting home-probably
LA, maybe Santa Barbara-bound-
but stuck around for a day or two,
inside my head, thinking of you
played a few of our sixties tunes.
Back to the bridge
to take a long view of Alcatraz,
felt a prayer coming on
then the cold sun plunged
arresting my song, turning the bay
and remains of our world to haze.
Rode a cable car of course,
Telegraph Hill burned for love
but summer winds tumed chill
dying the last blooms to pale.
In Candlestick Park alone
latent dreams reduced to all but ash-
needed to restore the guttering flame
so took a Greyhound,
journeyed-on south.
