mooning doggedly
over his novel, endlessly
expanding with jaundiced skies…
and he lay alone on pieces of unbleached canvas…

And this morning the marvellous poem of Rimbaud,
how it recurs far on the ear:
disintegrations of the wave-crash ‘violently
breaking into sail’, late voyaging
Lowell declares it. All summer reading
brave settings out, findings,
those who would do great things,
and the airwaves detonated
on the explosives of young men certain
of words and words’ enactment.
It occurs to you
cutting these swelling rose blooms, soft crush
falling free of the blade: familiar,
quiet, this is the untried
homeward journey.
