Mrs Crusoe Washes Up
This is the place I washed up
when my life broke apart in high seas.
Soon afterward, jetsam to my flotsam,
two old companions swam ashore
to join me, making eight new prints
beside mine in the sand. Once my eyes
adjusted to the strange perspective,
I began to look around the island,
but there was no Man Friday -
Saturday, Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
That’s when we settled down -
post-simian, feline, canine -
and built ourselves this nest
among the hermit crabs. I notice you
admiring my engineering skills -
the sand settee, sand television,
sand magazines. My special pride
is the sand chair that really rocks.
Yes, we’ve made the best of it.
Our six eyes gleam in the dark now
even when I don’t light a fire.
You say you want to rescue me?
